What students learn

Students learn a wide range of subjects in the NSW curriculum. They build skills, think creatively and prepare for life beyond school.

NESA's 6 learning areas are:

English

In our English program, students engage with a wide variety of texts and create their own compositions. This enables them to build essential knowledge, understanding, and skills that support both learning and personal growth. English provides opportunities for students to explore language, literature, and expression in ways that connect them to the world and to each other.

Through their study of English, students will:

  • Communicate effectively through speaking, listening, reading, writing, viewing, and representing.
  • Use language purposefully for different audiences, purposes, and contexts.
  • Develop imaginative, creative, interpretive, and critical thinking skills.
  • Express their identities and explore relationships with others and the wider world.
  • Reflect on their learning experiences and the insights gained through language and literature.
Mathematics

At Glenhaven Public School, our Mathematics program aims to build students’ confidence, curiosity, and critical thinking through a strong foundation in mathematical concepts and skills. We encourage students to see mathematics as a tool for understanding the world around them, while also developing persistence and creativity when approaching challenges. Our curriculum is organised around four key strands:

  • Working Mathematically
Students investigate and connect mathematical ideas through hands-on, inquiry-based learning. They strengthen their ability to problem-solve, reason, and communicate clearly about mathematical thinking in a variety of contexts.
  • Number and Algebra
Students develop fluency and efficiency with number facts, operations, and strategies. They explore patterns and relationships, using algebraic thinking to model and solve increasingly complex problems.
  • Measurement and Geometry
Students explore the properties of shapes, objects, and space. They learn to apply measurement skills and geometric reasoning to describe, compare, and solve problems connected to real-life situations.
  • Statistics and Probability
Students collect, represent, and interpret data to make sense of information. They learn to apply concepts of chance and probability to make informed predictions and decisions.
Human Society and Its Environment (HSIE)

At Glenhaven Public School, the HSIE curriculum supports students to explore their place in the world and understand how people, cultures, and environments are connected. Students develop the knowledge, values, and skills they need to participate actively and responsibly in their communities, while building an appreciation for history, geography, and the diverse societies around them.

The HSIE curriculum is organised into four key strands:

  • Change & Continuity
Students investigate past events and experiences, exploring how change and continuity have shaped societies. They make connections between the past, present, and future, developing historical understanding and perspective.
  • Cultures
Students learn about the diversity of cultures within Australia and across the world. They develop respect for different traditions, beliefs, and identities, and strengthen their ability to empathise with others.
  • Environments
Students explore the relationships between people and the natural and built environments. They consider issues of sustainability and learn about the importance of caring for resources and places to ensure a healthy future.
  • Social Systems & Structures
Students study the systems and structures that influence how societies function, including community roles, government, and economic systems. They build an understanding of citizenship, rights, and responsibilities, and learn how they can contribute to a fair and inclusive society.

Through HSIE, Glenhaven students develop critical thinking, inquiry skills, and a sense of social responsibility. They are encouraged to reflect on their role as informed, active citizens who can make a positive difference in their world.

Science and Technology

At Glenhaven Public School, our Science curriculum encourages students to explore, question, and make sense of the world around them. Through hands-on investigations, experimentation, and critical thinking, students develop a deep curiosity about natural phenomena and scientific concepts. We aim to nurture a sense of wonder while equipping students with the skills and understandings needed to apply science in their everyday lives.

The Science curriculum is organised around four key strands:

  • Biological Science
Students investigate living things and their interactions within ecosystems. They explore life cycles, adaptations, and the diversity of organisms, fostering respect for the interconnectedness of all living systems.
  • Chemical Science
Students examine the properties and behaviours of substances and how they change. Through practical experiments, they learn about the structure of matter, chemical reactions, and the role of chemistry in real-world applications.
  • Physical Science
Students study forces, motion, light, sound, and energy. They apply these concepts to explain everyday experiences and engage in problem-solving activities that connect physical laws to real-life situations.
  • Earth and Space Science
Students explore Earth’s systems, the solar system, and the broader universe. They investigate processes such as weather, geological activity, and human impact on the planet, developing an appreciation for sustainability and environmental responsibility.

Through an engaging and interactive Science program, Glenhaven students are encouraged to ask questions, test ideas, and think critically. These experiences foster creativity, innovation, and a lifelong interest in scientific discovery.

Personal Development, Health and Physical Education (PDHPE)

At Glenhaven Public School, our PDHPE program equips students with the knowledge, skills, and values they need to lead healthy, active, and fulfilling lives. We place a strong emphasis on building self-confidence, resilience, and social responsibility, helping students to make positive choices and contribute meaningfully to their communities. Through PDHPE, students develop movement skills, enhance fitness, and build an understanding of health and well-being that supports lifelong active living.

The PDHPE curriculum is organised around three key strands:

  • Fundamental Movement & Physical Activity
Students participate in a wide range of physical activities designed to develop fundamental movement skills, coordination, and fitness. Through sport, games, and active play, they build teamwork, persistence, and an appreciation for the benefits of regular physical activity.
  • Healthy Choices
Students learn about nutrition, health, safety, and personal well-being. They develop the skills to make informed decisions about their lifestyles and understand the impact of those choices on their physical, mental, and emotional health.
  • Self & Relationships
Students explore concepts of identity, relationships, and personal growth. They build social and emotional skills such as empathy, respect, communication, and resilience, which help them form positive connections and manage challenges effectively.

Through our PDHPE program, Glenhaven students are supported to become confident, responsible, and active individuals who value their own health and well-being and contribute positively to the world around them.

Creative Arts

At Glenhaven Public School, our Creative Arts curriculum gives students the opportunity to explore and develop their skills across a variety of artistic disciplines, including Visual Arts, Music, Drama, and Dance. Through these creative experiences, students build confidence, express ideas and emotions, and develop an appreciation for the personal, cultural, and social significance of the arts as powerful modes of communication.

  • Visual Arts
Students experiment with a range of materials, techniques, and artistic concepts to express their creativity. They learn to communicate ideas and emotions visually while developing technical skills and an understanding of different artistic traditions.
  • Music
Students engage with music through performance, composition, and listening activities. They explore diverse musical styles and cultures, enhancing their creativity, auditory skills, and appreciation for music as a form of expression.
  • Drama
Students participate in drama activities that encourage collaboration, storytelling, and imaginative thinking. Through role-play, character development, and performance, they develop communication skills and an understanding of human experiences.
  • Dance
Students explore movement, rhythm, and expression through dance. They develop choreography, teamwork, and the ability to convey ideas and emotions through physical performance.

Students at Glenhaven have opportunities to share their creative achievements through school performances, assemblies, and community events. These experiences celebrate their artistic growth, build confidence, and foster a strong sense of connection to the school community.
